Review

Rating: 6

The sorceress Emma Bannon serves the rule of Britannia and, in her role as a trusted servant of the Queen (both the current physical incarnation, Victrix, and the immortal spirit, Britannia), is tasked with investigating the mysterious deaths of several Mentaths in London. She manages to reach Archibald Clare, an unregistered Mentath, whose deductive ability provides the key to unraveling the multiple threats facing the Queen. Accompanied by the likes of Mikal, Emma’s bodyguard (called a Shield), and Ludovico Valentinelli, an Italian assassin, they must confront dragons, griffins, sorcerers, and an army of clockwork mecha. As an aside, with Britannia being personified, I found some of the renaming in this alternate history a little confusing and kept stumbling over themis as the name for the river Thames, envisioning a spirit of the river as the goddess of Justice or something.
