Review

Rating: 6

This short story collection is kind of a grab bag of wildy different takes on the urban fantasy genre, if one takes urban fantasy to mean a fantastical story in an urban setting. Or, in fact, any kind of story that might be supernatural in nature (a very generous definition that means if Arthur Conan Doyle were a modern writer and The Adventure of the Sussex Vampire had been set in London, that story might well have found it’s way into this collection). Stories by many of the best-known authors in the genre are represented here with some really good stories. Definitely a good entree into the genre, even if you don’t read it cover-to-cover. As a note, the last two stories are the best, even though the final story is sort of missing the “urban” part (unless you consider a military base in the Aleutians to be some sort of urban setting).
