Equal parts of Cold War intrigue and meta-human weirdness, the surreal tone of this book is a somewhat meandering tale about the future of humanity that has shades of The Men Who Stare at Goats along with the People stories of Zenna Henderson and Octavia Butler’s Parable series. The book starts off innocuously in one direction with a smuggling operation that goes awry in the Atlantic. The story peels apart like an onion as it bounces back and forth between East and West, reveling the stories of the characters and their history as they discover much of what they know and remember has been manufactured.
